In Solidarity with the Black Community
The Union of Pan Asian Communities (UPAC) stands in solidarity with the Black communities in San Diego, across the nation and globally in their demand for justice for the senseless deaths of George Floyd and others killed or injured while in police custody. UPAC holds firm in its belief that we must eradicate racism which destroys the fabric of our society and robs us of our humanity. An organization built on addressing the critical health, mental health, economic and educational needs of underserved populations, UPAC remains deeply committed to uniting people across cultures and generations.
In the words of Margaret Iwanaga Penrose, UPAC President & CEO, “the quality of a community is reflected in its capacity to assist, heal and strengthen its most vulnerable members.” The tragic deaths of George Floyd and others at the hands of the police clearly demonstrate the degree to which social and economic injustice continues to permeate our communities and institutions. It is incumbent on each of us to join the Black community and other communities in their quest for equality in education, economic opportunities, leadership and justice.
